Principal's Kōrero

We've had a great start to the new term, with more students enrolling at our school.
This roll increase means we have bigger classes this term in some spaces but we are working to address this by seeking extra support from the Ministry of Education by way of staffing. We will also be moving some children through to other classes in the junior area to ensure we can provide the best for all our students in these spaces.
We had the best time with the ice skating event in our school hall. Thank you all for participating and bringing your whānau along to the event. We saw so many smiles and heard all the laughter, we appreciated your support and will look at bringing this event back again very soon as it was such a hit! Below are some photos taken on the disco night.
This Month we have a scheduled Teacher Only Day. All schools were issued a specific date range in which we were to pick a teacher only day this year so we can work as a school on the new curriculum and prepare plans to implement within our school.
Our school will be closed for instruction on Friday 31st may 2024. Please do not send your child to school on this day.
This has been advertised late last year and a reminder sent out last term also. We are aware that we have new parents hence the repeated reminder here again.
The road works out side our school continues this term. They are not set to finish for at least another week. We will see the traffic lights on Whitmore Street being operational once all the infrastructure is completed.
I have really appreciated your cooperation with not parking in the bus bay. My concern is more about the safety of our students after school due to the large number of students leaving at the same time, this can cause chaos at the gate.
Also when cars are parked in the Bus bay and left unattended, this causes a series of obstacles for the bus to then have to navigate if it arrives at the same time. We know it's convenient to park right next to the school gate but this can not continue due to safety reasons.
In the mornings on road patrol, I have noticed a large number of students coming to school without jerseys or jackets. Your child is eligble to receive one free school Kids Can jacket from the office. If your child hasn't had one yet, and needs one, please see us today. We keep a note on file who has received one. If your child has grown out of theirs, please bring in their old one to receive a replacement jacket. We encourage all students to dress warmly now. Plain black pants and leggings are allowed. Nothing with writing or designs or patterns on them should be worn to school as per our school policy.
Please also encourage your children to wear helmets while riding their bikes and scooters in case they fall off or get knocked off their bikes and scooters. I have seen so many accidents in my time and it is never a happy ending when the child has a head injury. Covered shoes are also highly recommended as it will save a few toes from being cut off in things like chains etc.
Have a great week, stay warm and if your children are not well, please keep them at home until they are well enough to attend school.
